Dialogue 2: Watching Shadows Against The Wall (2009)

29 January, 2009, 22:58

Dear Phil Lloyd,

I have been looking at examples of your artwork and am very impressed by the
quality of your workmanship.

I'm an artist who is looking to commission an uncased adult fox (preferably
male) in the pose 'lying-on-its-side-dead' position (for lack of a better
description) to become part of an artwork installation I am making.

I wouldn't want it to be mounted to a base, and the fox itself wouldn't
have to be 'beautiful' or in brilliant condition. In fact, this may even
run counter to the intention of the artwork.

I would prefer not to have to provide the fox myself if possible, perhaps
you have stock, or can supply?

If you would be able to undertake this commission,or know someone who might,
could you mail me some information as to costs, turn around time, etc?

I can supply drawings of how the fox is envisaged to be installed in the
artwork if this helps.

Thanks for your time.
Regards,
Paul Abbott

Dear Paul,

Thank you for your kind comments about my work.  What you require in terms of
a fox would be no problem - and I can supply the original animal from stock
and mount it to your exact requirements.  If you can supply me with a
drawing, with written notes about any particular points, this would be very
helpful.  Although you are not concerned about the condition of the actual
fox, I assume you want it to look as lifelike (or rather dead like) as
possible.  In particular I would need to know if you wanted it facing to
the left or right, and if you wanted mouth slightly open or closed.  Note
that the finished mount is completely rigid (but very lightweight) so it is
important for me to know these kind of details in advance. A convincing dead
animal is as difficult to achieve as a convincing live one.

If you can supply me with a rough sketch also showing the animal in context
of the finished artwork, this also helps me get a 'feel' for the mount - I
have worked for artists before and find it helpful to know their final
intentions as it helps me to produce a mount which meshes more closely to
your requirements.

With regards to cost the price would be £_____ - my standard fox price.
Postage and packing of the completed item to UK address would be £___.  My
current delivery time is around 3 months from time of ordering.  No deposit
is required, just an email confirming the order with your full address and a
contact phone number - when the work is completed I send you photos and a
final invoice - upon receipt of payment item is despatched to you.

Hope all this is clear, but f you require any further information then do
not hesitate to contact me via email or call on ________

Phil Lloyd

The Copper Mine
Simon09                                  Anyone good with micro-electronics?

I’m an artist based in London. I’m trying to adapt or build the lights/ light programming from a fruit machine to make a sculpture. I won’t bore you with the details yet. Is there anyone in the London area with advanced knowledge of micro-electronics?

CanonMan                               System 80, who should be popping along here any minute now
System80                                Hi Simon, I guess you are the guy I was talking to via email?
System80                                Let’s hear the details.
Simon09                                  Hope this isn’t too long winded. I want to develop an eye test chart. On one row you have 9 rows of letters each row is a different size. There’s a total of 44 letters, I want to take each letter, print it on glass and set it in a cube. Inside the cube I want an individual light which will illuminate it in a set colour. So there will be 44 cubes all different sizes and unattached to each other apart from being wired together. Each cube will have a letter which will be illuminated. I want the cubes to be synched together to create light patterns, some random, some ordered as you would find on a fruit machine. I have drawings etc and am finalising the sizes. Obviously without knowing the size of the electronics inside I can’t size the cubes. Any ideas or suggestions or if you know someone who can work with e on this that would be great. I do have some money to commission the electronic work. I’ll make all the cubes etc etc so it’ll be a case of me installing the electronics in.

Simon09                                  Yes it’s me. Thanks for the tip and advice. Do you know any companies in London who work in micro-electronics that might be approachable?

System80                                Lit with white bulb or colours? How big will the cubes be? Will more than one be lit at anytime?

Simon09                                  I’m presuming I can cover the glass in a coloured gel. So they’ll be white bulbs. Does that make it easier? As for the cube sizes. I haven’t finalised that as I was unsure what the smallest size could be without it being a problem, any ideas? If you could give me 24hrs I’ll have the drawings finalised. More than one will be lit at the same time. Thanks for your time.

System80                                No gels needed. You want to use high-flux led’s- can do any colour easy. If you want multiple lights on then it’s gotta be wired up on a matrix, 8x8 is simple – allows up to 64 lights. How you gonna decide what gets lit? That is, what’s ultimately controlling these cubes?

System80                                btw, the smallest cube could have internal dimensions of 3x3x3mm, but that’s pushing it! They should be opaque so that they absorb and defuse the light.

Simon09                                  For the size, I want to multiply the ‘original’ size of the letters on an eye test chart by 20. This means the smallest cube will be 40x40x40mm and the largest cube 600x600x600mm (I’ll post the quantity and size for the complete set this evening). I’ve no idea of how you control what comes on when, I presume there’s some sort of programming inside. Any suggestions? As for making the cubes opaque. I’m not quite sure I understand. One face of the cube will have the letter on it which is what I want illuminated. I was presuming I would have one face with glass/ letter and the rest would be solid and non-transparent material. Thanks again for your help.

Simon09                                  Are you about System80? Any ideas from my last post?

System80                                You need to work out what or how they will be controlled, making lights go on is easy – but how you gonna do it? Buttons? Laptop? Pre-programmed sequence? You want cubes – but you don’t have a plan, you’ve thought this through from the wrong end. As for the cubes, opaque white plastic with high-flux led’s running on a strobbed matrix from some drivers and a micro-controller.

Dear Paul,

I am speaking to another taxidermist this weekend to see if he has a suitable
fox in his freezer - if he has then I could produce a mount in 4 to 5 weeks from now.
Price is fine as it is.I will email you on Monday with a definitive answer about the fox,
but I am fairly optimistic that I can do it for you.  If I commit to a date then
delivery by that date is guaranteed.

In the meantime if you want to email me a drawing then that would be great -
if its not possible to email then just post a copy to the address on the
contact page of my website.

Phil Lloyd

Subject: RE: Trophy Taxidermy - fox

Dear Paul,

Just to let you know the fox is done and drying - I am aiming to ship it out
to you at the start of next week.  Looks absolutely superb - one of the best
pieces of work I have ever produced - I will send pics before I ship, once
it is finished.

Could you please give me a confirmed destination shipping address - note it
will be sent by courier, and will have to be signed for on receipt.

Phil Lloyd
